Three thousand years ago, the first olive tree left Carthage to witness the growth of the olive groves in Europe. The soldiers of Hannibal, the famous General in the Carthaginian army, would, in times of peace, plant olive trees. They planted some in Tunisia, Spain, Gaul, Italy, Sardinia, Sicily and elsewhere.

The first olive grove ever planted in the Sahel region of Tunisia, and probably in all of the country, was indeed planted by Hannibal’s soldiers during his stay in the city of Sousse (Hadrumet) before the famous Zama battle.

Tunisia, or Africa Proconsularis, was nicknamed “Rome’s breadbasket” for the abundance, variety and top quality of its lands that sustained the whole Roman Empire.

Widely learned, he wrote in Punic a twenty- eight volume agricultural manual that deals namely with farming techniques, olive picking and growing, in addition to the vineyard, cuttings and varied agricultural methods. This treatise, a masterpiece that has never failed to appeal despite its many difficult parts, has made him the Father of Agronomy.
After the Third Punic War in 146 B.C., the Romans lay siege to the city of Carthage for three years, which resulted in its utter destruction and seventeen- day burning.
But, under the command of the Roman senate, Mago’s treatise on agronomy was the only work that the Romans took with them back home.It had already achieved universal renown
